Abuja, July 2, 2017 (NAN) Zimbabwean professional golfer, Visitor Mapwanya, on Sunday said he was much delighted at clinching the West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT) B & E tournament’s trophy and winner’s prize money.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the pro tournament teed off on Thursday at the IBB Golf and Country Club in Abuja and came to an end on Sunday.
No less than 40 players from seven countries, namely Zimbabwe, Gabon, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Spain took part in the four-day stroke play tournament.
The winner pocketed a mouth-watering prize money of 8,000 dollars, which was the biggest prize on the West Africa Golf Tour so far.
Mapwanya who had remained on top of the leaderboard from day one to the final round finished a total of 4 over par for the four rounds.
He finished the tournament with a 292 gross to win by 2 shots.
Mapwanya said he was grateful to God for the win and attributed his victory to the effort put in through several months of training.
“I feel so elated to win this tournament and the quite huge sum that accompanies it. This is one I cannot wait to celebrate. This is incredible.
“This is an event I approached like a major championship and I feel so happy to see my hardwork pay off.
“It may surprise many to know that I have been in Nigeria since February training hard for this tournament and familiarising myself with the course.
“I took part in the other WAGT tournaments but wasn’t successful, so I decided and was determined to give this one my best shot.
“Even though I didn’t have a great score and made some very bad decisions on some of the killer holes because of the condition of the green, but I put a lot into this week.
“Mentally, I stayed in it. And I must confess that my opponents put a lot of pressure on me till the final round. But my resilience and calm approach surely paid off.’’
The Zimbabwean said his goal was to play more tournaments so as to improve his game and world rankings.
“I will be playing in the Uganda Open by the end of August and then I will head back to my country Zimbabwe to take part in another event, before returning to play in the remaining tournaments of the WAGT,” he said. (NAN)
