Abuja, June 28, 2017 (NAN) The Ecolife Conservation Initiative, an NGO, says it has taken the campaign on impact of climate change on farming to Bamishi Village, Kuje Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mr Henry Akwitti, the Programme Director of the organisation, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

Akwitti said that the aim of the sensitisation was to educate the farmers in the area on the effects of climate change on agricultural activities.

According to him, the organisation decided to carry on the exercise to the rural farmers in the community because climate change affects agriculture in many ways.

“We tell the farmers that their actions such as bush burning and excess use of inorganic fertilisers can affect climate change.

“We also tell them the effect of illegal felling of trees can result in exposing the crops to extreme heat, excessive burning of fossil fuels, changes in average temperatures and rainfall, among others.

“We let them know the adaptation practices they can imbibe to help them achieve greater yield in the farming activities,’’ he said.

Akwitti said that the sensitisation was apt considering the fact that a large number of people had now taken to farming and maximum yield was expected.

He said that the exercise would help to enhance activities in the farming system and increase crop production in the area.

Akwitti said through the programme, farmers were learning adopt other means of bush clearing, use of organic fertilisers and the application of improved seed varieties. (NAN)
