Sokoto, June 20, 2017 (NAN) The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission on Tuesday disbursed N3 million as Zakkat (obligatory charity) to the needy in the state.
The Chairman of the commission, Malam Lawal Maidoki, said at the flag off of the distribution exercise in Sokoto that the N3 million was paid to the commission by individuals as zakkat.
“ The money being distributed was either paid directly to the commission or into its account by individuals as zakkat to be given to the needy.
“As such, we shared them based on the request of the needy, with 50 persons benefiting from the said amount,” Maidoki said.
The chairman also said that 213 persons, who were trained in various skills by the commission, would be given N 20,000 each to start a business.
He added that another set of 600 needy persons would also each be given a 25-kg bag of rice , N 2,000 and one pack of instant drink as government support during the Ramadan.
Maidoki urged needy persons in the state to shun street begging as the act was not based on the tenets of Islam.
”All the assistance given by the government is in order to support the needy to become self reliant in the society,’’ he said. (NAN)
