Drainage
By Uche Bibilari
Gwagwalada (FCT), June 14, 2017 (NAN) A cross-section of residents in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT have decried the poor drainage system in the council.
The residents told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday, alleged that there are no properly planned drainage systems in the council.
According to the residents, the few available ones are either blocked by dirty or heap of sand, making the free flow of water difficult during the rainy season.
Mrs Funke Ajibade, a civil servant, said that the attitude of many residents also contributed to the blockage, adding that many dispose their waste indiscriminately.
“The way some residents dispose their waste indiscriminately contributes to the blockage of some of the available drainage in the council.
“During the rainy season all these waste find their way into the drainage making it difficult for the free flow of water which results to flooding in some part of the council.
She also said that there was inadequate drainage, adding that more should be constructed to aid the free flow of water.
Similarly, Mr Michael Adejo, a resident of Phase 3, the Area council still have a lot of work to do as regarding drainage system and its management.
He said that if not given urgent attention might result to serious flooding whenever there was heavy downpour in the council.
He appealed to the council Chairman, Alhaji Zakari Dobi, to come to the aid of the residents and find a lasting solution to the drainage problem.
Also, Mrs Deborah Ajayi, a trader, said that the council should cultivate the habit of evacuating waste on daily bases instead of allowing it to spend days and in some cases weeks before evacuation.
She said it would forestall the blockade.
Ajayi said that market men and women should also be sensitised on proper waste management, adding that many were in the habit of pouring dirty inside the gutters anytime it rains.
“Anytime it is raining you will see people pouring their piled up waste into the gutters instead of them to dispose it in the provided locations.
“ This is also one of the major reasons why flooding occurs in some part of the areas of the council, I think there should be sanctions on defaulters.
“More drainage should be constructed and channel properly to avoid flooding in the council,’’ Ajayi said. (NAN)
