Abuja, June 13, 2017 (NAN) A 23-year-old driver, Kayinde Olatunji, on Tuesday, begged a Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, to reduce his punishment after pleading guilty to one-count charge of theft.

Olatunji said “I plead with this court to reduce my punishment for I know I am guilty of the allegation.

“I am sorry for what I did; please sir temper justice with mercy.”

The presiding judge, Garba Ogbede, had sentenced Olatunji of Opposite Zaria Kano Park, Gwagwalada, Abuja, to one year in prison with an option to pay N30,000 fine for attempting to steal a car.

Ogbede warned the convict to desist from committing crime after serving his punishment.

The convict was unable to pay the N30,000 fine and was taken to Kuje Prison.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Vivian Oporomo, told the court that Olatunji was caught by the chairman of Motor Union Worker attached to Gosa market, Airport road, Abuja, on June 3.

Oporomo said the matter was reported at Iddo police station, Abuja Airport road, after Gosa market, by motor union workers attached to Gosa market on the same date.

She added that on the same date at about 3.20 p.m., Olatunji criminally went to Gosa market and attempted to steal a car but he was caught in the act.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict confessed that he actually attempted to steal the car, an offence which contravened Section 288 of the Penal

Oporomo had prayed the court to try the defendant summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015 because of his admission of guilt.(NAN)
