Afikpo (Ebonyi), June 12, 2017 (NAN) The Ebonyi Government has warned Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) against rejecting NYSC members on flimsy excuses.
Gov. David Umahi gave the warning at the closing ceremony of the 2017 Batch ‘A’ orientation exercise of the NYSC at its permanent orientation camp in Afikpo on Monday.
Represented by Mr Charlse Akpuenika, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Umahi directed MDAs to accept the services of corps members posted to them and not offer any excuse for rejection.
“The corps members should, however, know that the government has adopted a policy of deploying them more to schools than MDAs in order to effectively render their services to the state.
“Employers in the private sector are hereby encouraged to accept the services of these young and vibrant Nigerian youths in the interest of the state and the nation,” he said.
The governor cautioned the corps members against unnecessary and unauthorised journeys which in the past had resulted in unpleasant consequences for them.
“Your lives are very precious to government and your families, especially considering the huge capital outlay invested in you since childhood,” he said.
He enjoined the corps members to collaborate with his administration to improve the living standard of the people by embarking on viable community development projects.
“You should also shun indiscipline and corruption as they are cankerworms which have held Nigeria down over the years and brought her untold hardship and underdevelopment,” he said.
Mrs Regina Iluebbey, the Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, noted that the corps members exhibited a high sense of discipline, hardwork, commitment, loyalty and patriotism throughout their stay on camp.
“This is an indication that with appropriate character moulding and requisite orientation, educated Nigerian youths are ready to lead the efforts to restore the country’s lost dignity and pride in the comity of nations.
“The corps members within the course of the three weeks camping exercise, participated in all camp activities such as drills, man ‘o’ war activities, skills acquisition, training, professional orientation, among others,” she said.
“I charge the corps members to accept their posting in good faith and work very hard wherever they find themselves, to uphold the core values of the NYSC scheme,” she said.
Mr Jimmy Okpe, a corps member from Benue, noted that he would contribute to the development of Ebonyi as he enjoyed six years of free education from the government in the past. (NAN)
