Ibadan, June 12, 2017 (NAN) The Democrat, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has called on political office holders in the country to perform well in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

National Leader of the organisation, Mr Kehinde Ojoawo, in a statement on Monday in Ibadan, charged politicians to emulate late M.K.O. Abiola’s selflessness virtues.

He said that the call was necessary so that “the labour and death of heroes of democracy in Nigeria will not be in vain’’.

Ojoawo said that in spite of the enormous wealth Abiola had, he humbled himself and laid down his life during the struggle to dismantle military rule in Nigeria.

“It is regrettable that politicians in Nigeria have not performed well in office since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999.

“Some of the politicians are selfish as they have used the privilege of being in public office to amass wealth for themselves and their families,” he said.

Ojuawo said that aside the fact that democracy had not yielded enough fruits for Nigerians, the country had remained in the shackles of former military leaders who had recycled themselves back to power. (NAN)
