Lagos, May 26, 2017 (NAN) The National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber and Non Metallic Products Employees ( NUCFRLANMPE) on Friday advised its Employers to ensure prompt implementation of the National Joint Industrial Council Agreement (NJIC).
Mr Goke Olatunji, President of NUCFRLANMPE told newsmen while answering questions in Lagos that its employers’ body, the Chemical and Metalic Products Employers Federation (CAMPEF), has agreed on a new minimum wage.
According to Olatunji, CAMPEF has signed an agreement with the union to increase workers salary from N20,000 to N23,800 monthly.
He commended CAMPEF for signing the agreement and advised them to hasten its implementation, to avoid any industrial unrest in the sector.
“The NJIC is reviewed every two years but agreement on the last one has dragged beyond the stipulated period. Our members have been cooperative with their Employers, in spite of the challenges confronting them.
“If any employer in the sector fails to implement the new agreement, we will not hesitate to call out our members to go on strike,’’ Olatunji warned.
The union president said that the memorandum of collective agreement signed between CAMPEF and NUCFRLANMPE on the platform of NJIC on March 28, would take effect from April 1, 2017.
He said that the new NJIC agreement was signed by 21 members, with nine drawn from the employers’ body, while 12 were from the union.
Olatunji said that the agreement would last for two years and that it would continue to be in force even after expiration, until a new agreement was negotiated and signed.
He said that both parties agreed to take cognisance of the prevailing economic situation as its affected the chemical and Non-Metallic Industries.
Olatunji said that other issues agreed upon included commitment to productivity, increase in housing allowance, transportation, as well as overtime rates, standard hours of work, leave allowance and redundancy benefits.(NAN)
