Moscow, Oct. 10, 2016 (Xinhua/NAN) The Russian Defence Ministry on Monday refuted recent accusation by Britain that Russia was responsible for escalating the civil war in Syria.

The ministry’s spokesman Maj.-Gen. Igor Konashenkov made the refutal in a statement issued in Moscow.

Last Sunday, British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, told newsmen that Russia should be “held accountable” for its actions in Syria’s Aleppo, where airstrike on UN humanitarian convoy left dozens dead.

Fallon claimed that Russia was determined to prolong the civil war in Syria by conniving with the regime to bomb civilians.

“ Before voicing unconvincing arguments about the alleged Russian responsibility for the situation in Syria and in particular, in Aleppo, the British minister should think about what Britain has done in that poor country,’’ Konashenkov said.

He said that the war torn country had recorded a lot of progress as a result of Russia’s interventions.

Konashenkov listed some of the achievements to include, establishment of 1,000 liberated settlements, huge areas freed from IS terrorist group and thousands tons of humanitarian aid delivered to the needy.

He asked Britain to provide comparable figures of its contributions to peaceful settlement in Syria.

“Britain could also be held responsible for the advance of the IS in Syria, which could result in the transformation of this country into a terrorist caliphate,’’ Konashenkov said. (Xinhua/NAN)
