Osogbo, Oct. 10, 2016 (NAN) Mr Bosun Oyintiloye, a member of Osun House of Assembly, has called for stringent punishment against perpetrators of child abuse in the country.

Oyintiloye, (APC, Obokun) and the House Committee Chairman on Information and Strategy made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Osogbo.

He said the recent spate of child abuse in the country was worrisome, and called on government at all levels to address the issue.

He expressed worry at the Nigerian child whom he said was not safe being exposed to danger, sexual abuse, exploitation, stigmatization as well as domestic abuse.

Oyintiloye said it was also unfortunate that parents and guardians, who were supposed to provide the first line of protection for children, were the ones abusing them.

“Child abuse is the mental, sexual or physical assault of a child either by the parents or guardians.

“Child abuse, in whatever form, is a violation of the right of a child and it must be condemned by all.”

He urged non-governmental organisations and private individuals to join hands with government in intensifying campaign against child abuse in the country.

The law maker enjoined government, at all levels, to also put in place mechanism that would ensure strict enforcement of child right Act.

He said anyone caught in the act of child abuse should be made to face the wrath of the law. (NAN)
