Abuja, May 19, 2017 (NAN)The National Chairman, Young Democratic Party (YDP), Mrs Aye Dakpokpo, has said that political re-orientation was crucial in strengthening democracy in Nigeria and should be pursued.

Dakpokpo said this when she visited the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.

She said that the political class in the country needed to rise beyond mediocrity and unacceptable norms in democratic governance, and embrace real democratic culture in the interest of the country.

Dakpokpo said that YDP was committed to raising young politicians, who would advance the aspirations and achievements of the political forebears of the country.

She expressed willingness of the party to partner NAN in propagating the potential of young persons in governance.

“We are here to familiarise ourselves with NAN in order to convey our fresh idea of governance to the youths and to contribute our quota to the political growth of the nation.

“Nigerians needs to know their rights and they deserve to be heard as well. So, we will leverage on the partnership with NAN to enlighten them on political issues to change the Nigerian story and make it great across the globe,’’ she said.

Dakpokpo called on the youths in the country to embrace politics and not allow themselves to be intimidated by older politicians.

Receiving her, Managing Director of NAN, Mr Bayo Onanuga, said that the Agency would collaborate with the party to promote peace and enhance development.

Onanuga, who was represented by the Editor-in-Chief of NAN, Mr Zango Yusuf, assured that the agency would use its wide network in the country and abroad to support good governance in the country.

“NAN has a robust coverage size and uses it to contribute to the development of the nation; this is because we strive to be objective in whatever we do.

“We have never been found wanting in our reports, because we believe that the Agency is first and foremost, owned by Nigerians and they have the right to be heard.

“So, I want to assure you that we will give you the right coverage.’’

Onanuga said the Young Democratic Party was one that Nigerians would like to welcome and follow because its focus was raising fresh leaders, away from the norm of recycling people.

He said that by this, the party was bringing fresh impetus into the political system and that with fresh ideas people would have fresh choice to make.

“We will partner you in helping to inject fresh dialogue and debate in the political atmosphere in the country,’’ he added. (NAN)
