Abuja, May 19, 2017 (NAN) Some residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday called on the Federal Government to strengthened measures to curb increased cases of abuse of minors.
According to UNICEF, over 60 per cent Nigerian children suffer sexual, physical and other kinds of violence in the society.
The residents who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja also advised parents to take the responsibilities to cater for their children seriously.
Mrs Deborah Sunday, a teacher, called for the establishment of guidance and counselling units in primary schools.
She also called for the strengthening of the existing ones for proper sensitisation of students on such abuse.
“ There is a need for guidance and counseling units to also be established in primary school to further educate them on how to handle such situation,’’ Sunday said.
She said such counselling would reduce the negative impact on victims, particularly on their social lives.
Similarly, Mrs Hadiza Usman, a mother of four, called for stiffer punishment for offenders to serve as deterrent to others.
On his own part, Mr Monday Olushola, a civil servant called on the government to expedite action in implementing the Sexual Offenses Bill, which was passed into law in 2015.
Olushola said the implementation of the bill would further strengthen the law against all sexual offenders by ensuring life imprisonment for rapists and child molesters.
“ This bill when fully implemented would ensure that all details of sexual offenders are captured in a database so that anybody that wants to employ them would know, so that they won’t pose a risk to unsuspecting persons,’’ he said.
Mrs Agnes David, a civil servant also called on parents to exhibit good moral behaviour as well as properly train their children.
“When Parents play their role in impacting good morals in their children, the society would be rid of all these negative vices,’’ David said. (NAN)
