NCC reaffirms commitment to consumer advocacy

Keffi (Nasarawa State), May18, 2017 (NAN) The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to support the call for the consumer advocacy in Nigeria.

Mrs Hellen Obi, the Head of NCC Zonal Operator Department, disclosed this during NCC zonal consumers’ interactive forum at the Emir of Keffi’s palace in Keffi, Nasarawa state.

According to her, the programme is to inform, educate and protect the consumers against unfair practices from telecoms operators.

She said that the programme was to strengthen the consumers’ confidence in telecommunications companies over sharp practices from telecoms operators.

“The commission in recognition of the importance of consumer in the industry has declared this year 2017 as the year of telecom consumer and was inaugurated at the commission’s office in Abuja on March15.

“This declaration of the telecom consumers is in tandem with the eight-point agenda of the Executive Vice Chairman /CEO of the commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta which include protection and empowerment of the consumer,” she said.

Obi said that the commission introduced some strategic initiative as key drivers of the conversation which included Activation of the “Do-Not-Disturb”(DND) services across all networks.

She said that the service would enable the consumer to stop receiving unsolicited messages from telecoms operators.

Obi said that the consumers were encouraged to utilise the NCC Toll Free Line 622 to report complaints pertaining to unresolved issues with their service providers to improve service quality.

She said that the event was being organised to empower the telecom consumers by equipping them with information and education required to make informed choices in the use of ICT services. (NAN)
