Abuja, May 15, 2017 (NAN) Mr Abayomi Rotimi, the Executive Director of Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF), on Monday, urged parents to spend quality time with their children and teach them good cultural values.

Rotimi gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
in Abuja against the backdrop of the International Day of Families, observed on May 15 every year.

This year’s observance focuses on the role of families and family-oriented policies in promoting education and overall well-being of their members.

In particular, the Day is to raise awareness on the role of families in promoting early childhood education and lifelong learning opportunities for children and youth.

The WOTCLEF boss said both parents in Nigeria were now fond of pursuing their careers without having quality time to mentor their children on core values, morals and traditions of the land.

According to him, the collapse of such African culture and values caused many vices such as human trafficking which is alien to the culture in the country.

He noted that “if someone knows the value of human lives, he or she will not
indulge in human trafficking.”

The director pointed out that children were the future of the country and urged parents to ensure that adequate attention was given to them to live an upright life.

“There is serious disconnect between parents and their children now in Nigeria as parents get carried away with their jobs.

“I feel it is a missing gap, an African child does not behave like an African anymore even when such child lives in Africa. Parents must raise their children the way they were raised.

“We need to go back to Africa’s socialisation process and carry our children along in our culture.” he added. (NAN)
