Meeting
Washington, May 10, 2017 (dpa/NAN) U.S. President Donald Trump’s scheduled meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the White House on Wednesday is expected to focus on the potential for collaboration in the fight against terrorism, a report said.
The meeting, slated for 14:30 p.m., is a follow-up to a telephone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
The potential for collaboration against terrorism, particularly in war-torn Syria, was the focus of that telephone conversation, according to a Kremlin statement.
Lavrov, who last visited Washington in 2013, is also expected to meet with the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was in Moscow last month for talks that focused on Syria.
There is no scheduled meeting between Trump and Putin yet, Peskov said.
The presidents are widely expected to meet in July at the Group of 20 (G20) summit in the German city of Hamburg.
U.S-Russian relations have been strained due to Russian support for the Syrian regime.
Tillerson said earlier that the U.S is looking to stabilise broader U.S.-Russian relations by both addressing minor irritants and finding areas of cooperation.
“The two greatest nuclear powers in the world cannot have this kind of relationship,” Tillerson said of the low point in U.S.-Russian ties. (dpa/NAN)
