Abuja, May 10, 2017 (NAN) The Village Head of Karmo-Sabo Community in the FCT, Mr Yunisa Sarki,  says the community is collaborating with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to promote environmental health in the area.

Sarki made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that refuse in the community had become a source of worry; as such, it could lead to untold environmental and health hazards.

According to the village head, the collaboration will ensure effective sanitation and improve the well-being of residents in the area.

Sarki said the village leaders in the community had mobilised youths in the area for an intensive public awareness and clean-up.

The village head said that the community would ensure that the awareness and the clean-up extended to all the villages in the community.

“For the past two weeks, we have been going round to pass information across; we have instructed the residents to remove all the wastes around the area.

“We also tell them that every building in the community must have good toilets.

“Any home that does not have a befitting toilet, we are going to take action because we are partnering with AEPB to make sure that we sanitise the area.

“AEPB had provided cleaning contractors with about four trucks and one caterpillar to ensure that wastes are evacuated.

“And we have created two different areas for the residents to be dumping their refuse.

“AEPB has also supported the community by providing some of their officials, to monitor the contractors, to make sure that they remove refuse in the environment as soon as possible,’’ he said.

Sarki said the community leaders had decided that any resident caught dumping waste indiscriminately around the area would be made to pay a specific amount of fine.

He added that such action would reduce indiscriminate waste dumping in the area.

“I am calling on the residents to ensure that wastes are dump at the designated areas, provided for them,’’ he said.   (NAN)
