Lafia, May 8, 2017 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Government has acquired 1000 hectares of land for the expansion of the State Polytechnic, Lafia, according to the Rector, Dr. Silas Gyar.
Gyar told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lafia that payment of compensation to the owners had since been completed.
“With compensation already paid, management is set for expansion; we are set to implement the original master plan that would enable us meet our mandate,” he said.
He said that efforts to open up the school for more developments had been frustrated over time, “because we were operating on borrowed land”.
“But Governor Tanko Al-Makura has graciously settled all compensations to the land owners and management is indeed grateful for the gesture,” Gyar said.
He explained that prior to the payment of the compensation, management encountered a lot of problems from the natives who frustrated projects due to issues bordering on land statues.
“We had an unpleasant experience and faced a lot of intimidation and harassment. We could not build structures crucial to meeting our mandate. We are happy that the bitter phase is now history.”
He said that the institution had worked hard to meet requirements for accreditation and was awaiting for the visit by the accreditation team.
“I am optimistic that when the team comes, all our courses will be approved because we have gone much farther than where we were, when the team came last,” he added.
Gyar said that the institution introduced new courses – autotronics and mechatronics, in the Engineering Faculty during the 2016/2017 academic session, while equipment needed for the establishment of a local Radio/TV station had been put in place.
“We are just awaiting the approval of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to commence operation,” he said. (NAN)
