Abuja, May 8, 2017 (NAN) Some associations have decried failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to capture the data of Persons Living with Disabilities in the on-going Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) process.
The associations, Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) and Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) said this in a statement issued by the Executive Director, CCD, Mr David Anyaele on Monday in Abuja.
The statement said that without the data, INEC would not be able to ensure the full participation of Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in the electoral process.
It expressed the“ belief that an opportunity still existed for INEC to capture the data of PLWDs, disaggregated by disability types, during the on-going CVR, and before the 2019 elections’’.
Anyaele called on all eligible Persons with Disabilities across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to register in the on-going CVR.
“It reminded eligible PLWDs that without registering during the CVR process and collecting their Permanent Voters Cards, they would not be able to vote during elections.
“Persons with disabilities must realise that it is only by voting during elections that we can shape the policies that determine our quality of life,’’ he said.
Anyaele also commended INEC for its continuous dialogue with stakeholders to help make Nigeria’s electoral processes more credible and inclusive. (`NAN)
