Ibadan, May 4, 2017 (NAN) A Professor of Library and Information Science, Iyabo Mabawonku on Tuesday advised Nigerian universities to open more ICT centres and laboratories for teaching to accelerate technological development.
Mabawonku, who lectures at the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, gave the advice in an inaugural lecture on “From Tablet to Tablet: Information, Media and Technology Acceptance’’ on Thursday in Ibadan.
According to her, knowledge transfer is crucial for national development thus libraries play important role in documentation and preservation of oral and written information.
She said that much as technology had become a way of life, it must be embraced by all for effective teaching, learning and research in Nigeria as obtained in advanced countries.
She said that lecturers should invest more in technology for their personal use to increase their access to timely information.
“Lecturers need to encourage interaction with their students, especially with those under distance education programmes,’’ she said.
Mabawonku advised managers of library and information sciences in the country to review their curriculum constantly to reflect global trend in ICT development.
She also recommended better funding of technology by the stakeholders, especially the government at all levels.
She said that students should be sensitised on knowledge and observance of information, ethics, including plagiarism and cyber ethics. (NAN)
