Zaria (Kaduna State), April 28, 2017 (NAN) Residents of Zaria have appealed to the Kaduna State Government to fast-track the completion of ongoing drainage channel projects across the city to avoid flood, as the rainy season sets in.

The residents made the appeal in separate interviews with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria on Friday.

Malam Ibrahim Mohammed, a resident of Zaria, urged the government to complete the construction of drainage channels across the city in view of the commencement of rainy season.

“The drainage projects in Zaria, which started long ago, have reached advanced stages, prior to their suspension due to some lapses identified by the project supervisors.

“However, we are appealing to government to expedite action on the completion of the projects in good time to avoid flooding,’’ he said.

Another resident, Alhaji Hamisu Abubakar, said: “If the projects remain as it is, many people will be affected and many houses will be submerged in the event of flooding.

“Apart from converting houses and surroundings to flood-prone areas, the non-completion of the drainage projects will also turn the places into mosquito-breeding grounds.

“It is, therefore, pertinent to call on the government to come to our aid so as to avoid the degradation of our environment, which will, in turn, result in disease outbreaks,’’ he added.

Alhaji Mohammed Mohammed, also a resident, advised the project contractors, particularly the sub-contractors, to fear God while executing their contracts and come up with quality constructions.

“During the supervision of the projects, it was revealed that some sub-contractors did not abide by the terms and conditions of the contracts.

“The projects were designed in such a way that would guarantee quality service delivery.

“However, government should, after due investigations, mobilise those contractors, who executed their projects according to specifications, back to site,’’ he said. (NAN)
