Ibadan, Oct. 6, 2016 (NAN) Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has urged judicial officers to adhere strictly to their code of ethics and professional conduct in the discharge of their duties.
Ajimobi made the call on Thursday in Ibadan at the celebration of the new legal year by the Oyo State judiciary.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Ismail Ali, said that the code of ethics had roots in the holy books and emphasises righteousness.
He said for the society to be great and Nigeria to assume its leadership status, change must “ not only begin with each and everyone but we must all be the change itself.’’
“Theses are values that must be treated by lawyers, judges and judicial officers in this legal year.
“Government is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and properties of her citizens and declares zero tolerance against vices such as armed robbery, murder and kidnapping among others.
“I urge every member of the public not to take laws into their hands but report incidents promptly to law enforcement agencies to prevent jungle justice,’’ Ajimobi said.
He promised to find permanent solutions to the problems associated with the use of longhand in order to aid quick dispensation of justice.
In his contribution, the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Munta Abimbola, assured the public of quick dispensation of justice in the state.
Abimbola also said that measures had been put in place in the new legal year to fast track quick delivery of matters in court and reduce prison congestion.
He said that the judiciary had enough judges to handle the numerous cases before it.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prayers were offered both at a mosque and church for the commencement of the new legal year.
In his lecture, an Islamic cleric, Dr Lere Ibrahim of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, urged judges to fear God in the discharge of their duties.
Ibrahim said that for the society to be better off, judges must discharge their duties diligently without fear or favour. (NAN)
