Abuja, April 7, 2017 (NAN) Andrew Odoh, Nigeria’s number one ranked golfer on Friday said he was hoping to poke the winner’s cheque at the forthcoming West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT) Port Harcourt Classic.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the WAGT Port Harcourt Classic is scheduled to tee-off from May 12 to May 15 at the Air Assault Golf Club in Port Harcourt.

Odoh, who was crowned winner of the Order of Merit in the 2016 WAGT season said he was hoping to face stiff competition from rival Ghana’s Vincent Torgah.

Torgah, a two-time runner up at the tour clinched victory at the last WAGT Championship of the 2016 season at the Arsenal Golf Club in Owerri.

“I am feeling great and rearing to go, but with Torgah you never know.

“He is very competitive. He tinkers with his swing a lot, hitting the ball very long and could give me a run for the money.

“He is also very familiar with the tour just as I am and winning the last tour of the 2016 season will no doubt add confidence to his game and boost his moral,’’ he said.

Odoh, who missed the WAG Tour 2017 season opener (FCT Classic) owing to his participation at the Sunshine Tour in South Africa, said he was looking forward to a great and exciting tournament.

“The Sunshine Tour was a great experience for me even though I couldn’t make the cut.

“I wanted some game time out of the shores of the country and it’s worked out well for me.

“So, I’m now back home and focused on winning the Port Harcourt title and looking forward to taking the cash,’’ he said.

NAN also reports that professional golfers from Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Zimbabwe are taking part in the three-day event.

Emeka Okatta, the WAGT President also revealed that the Port Harcourt Golf Club would be hosting the tournament for the first time in the history of the tour.

“The prize money for the Port Harcourt Classic is N10 million with no fewer than 120 professionals playing three rounds of golf over 54 holes in a stroke play format.

“The winner will pocket a whopping N1.6 million with 500 points for Order of Merit.,’’ he said. (NAN)
