Lafia, April 6, 2017 (NAN) Alhaji Yusuf Musa, General Manager, Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS), has advised the National Population Commission (NPC), to work closely with the media toward a successful census in 2018.

Musa gave the advice on Thursday in Lafia, when the management of NPC paid him a courtesy visit.

“It is only when you partner with the media that the people will be well informed about the importance of the exercise.

“The media will let Nigerians appreciate the role of a population census in national planning and growth,

“The media will also help to debunk the crude belief that the census is meant for tax purposes as is already being  insinuated,” he said.

According to him, it is only when the people are educated and enlightened that Nigerians will come out en-mass for the census exercise.

Musa emphasised the importance of population census in the allocation of resources and projects, and urged the NPC to ensure that no area was under-counted during the 2018 population census

The manager promised to work with the commission toward a successful headcount, and implored critical stakeholders to ensure a successful exercise to ease Nigeria’s projections and planning needs.

Earlier, Alhaji Zakari Kigbu, who represents the state at the NPC, had said that the visit was to solicit the organisation’s support in the area of awareness creation ahead of the census exercise.

On the issue of vital registration, which comprises birth and death registration, the commission called on parents to ensure that children were registered at birth.

He said that Nasarawa was the only state that had launched the National Birth Registration Exercise, stressing that the vital registration would help children to have legal identity as citizens, and also update the commission’s records. (NAN)
