Expert urges stakeholders to support govts. to tackle sanitary problems

Abuja April 5, 2017 (NAN) Mr Williams Osaze, the President, Society for the Promotion of People`s Rights, an NGO on Wednesday urged stakeholders to support governments to tackle sanitary problems across the country.

Osaze made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said that stakeholders should make every effort to support government at all levels to promote sound environmental sanitation practices among the populace.

He said that stakeholders should partner with various sectors of government and global organisations to ensure that sanitary facilities were provided for communities where open defecation had become the norm.

The president said that Nigerians should give attention to importance of accessibility to toilet’s sanitation.

“It is also important to remind us the significance of every household having a toilet by business and public places.’’

He said that Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) six was to ensure water supply and sanitation for all.

Osaze said that the achievement of the goal would remove sanitation stigma and heighten advocacy for multiple benefits that flow from better hygiene, household sanitation, indiscriminate waste disposal and waste management.

He said that access to sanitary facilities remained a mirage to majority of people, adding that some communities still used bush as their regular means for excreta disposal.

“Many institutions do not have good sanitary facilities. It is either not functioning or it is being misused by people.’’

He called on Nigerians to ensure that they practiced the habit of safe excreta disposal by building and owning a toilet in their environment.

He said that sanitation should be one of the important activities and constitutional responsibility of every Nigeria.

Osaze urged Nigerians to join hands with the government to support strategies toward achieving a higher level of sanitation coverage in the country.

He said that a sustainable maintenance of toilets was important for individual quality, community as well as for the nation. (NAN)
