Lagos, March 29, 2017 (NAN) Mr Olutoyin Ayinde, the Second National Vice President of Nigeria Institute of Town Planners (NITP), has advised members to establish effective communication among themselves to excel professionally.
Ayinde said that effective communication was the key to a successful business.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Wednesday that there was wide information gap among operators, adding that this had affected the growth of the profession.
According to him, town planners needed to develop good rapport among themselves and should be advising each other about the profession.
He said that teamwork and good communication were essential for the effective operation and development of town planning profession.
“It ranges from decision-making to policy-making, from education and training to human resource management.
“You can spend 80 per cent of a working day communicating with others.
“However, the achievement of strategic goals and plans is virtually impossible if the right people do not receive the right message in the right way and at the right time.

“So, by employing good communication skills, business organisations and professions will work effectively towards creating and keeping clients,’’ he said.

Ayinde said that good communication was all about transmitting and receiving messages at the personal, interpersonal, team and organisational levels.

He said that the form of communication in an organisation had major influence on productivity, morale, energy levels, teamwork and levels of co-operation on informal and formal bases.

“As a practitioner you will understand and accept that there are no perfect communicators all the time.

“Everyone makes mistakes. The key to being an effective communicator is to act like one and you will eventually become one.

“Know this for sure that your communication skills will be challenged every now and then; use challenges as an opportunity to grow and learn new things,’’ Ayinde said. (NAN)
