Jos, March 27, 2017 (NAN) The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has organised a quality assurance training workshop for Educational Secretaries in the Local Governments to improve education standard in basic schools.
Addressing participants drawn from the 17 councils on Monday in Jos, Prof. Matthew Sule, the board’s Executive Chairman, said the five-day workshop was aimed at boosting enrolment and retention at the basic education level.
Sule said that the training with the theme: ‘Building the Capacity of Quality Assurance Officers for Sustainable Basic Education Development’ was in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
According to him, best international practices and other necessary skills will be imparted on the officers to appropriately monitor schools at the basic level.
He said that the education secretaries and Quality Assurance officers in the 17 LGAs would help entrench the core values and vision of SUBEB, which is to help pupils to read, and write among others.
“ The training is to help these officers step down knowledge at their various levels, which is to help the child at the basic education level to read, write, be proficient in numerals and also inculcate integrity and transparency.
“ The corruption bedeviling the nation is because children at the basic education level were not inculcated good virtues at the elementary level, “ Sule said.
In his remarks, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary, UBEC, said the training was aimed at recognising measurable outcomes on quality to facilitate its contribution to achievement of good standards.
Bobboyi, represented by Dr Eneh Adikwu, the Northern, Zonal Coordinator of UBEC, said every SUBEB should have a functional Quality Assurance Department with adequate number of trained manpower.
He appealed to state governments to adequately fund such departments and provide it with the necessary logistics for schools visits at both the state and Local Government levels.
According to him, quality control was the major challenge in basic education system due to limited synergy among relevant stakeholders and departments.
“ We have thirty one SUBEBs that have conducted 2015 second level training of Quality Assurance officers at the State and LGEA levels.
“`It is expected that at the end of this training, officers will be well equipped with relevant and necessary skills required to conduct effective assurance in schools and be able to write good Quality assurance reports, after schools visits, “ he said.
In his remarks, Mr Azi Atu, the Chairman, Education Secretaries Forum in Plateau, said they would be committed to ensure the Plateau child enjoys improved education at the grassroots level with knowledge acquired from the training. (NAN)
