Ibadan, March 22, 2017(NAN) The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Oyo State chapter, has advised its members to embrace satellite-based technology and other emerging innovations in surveying practice.

Mr Olufemi Iyiola, the Chairman, Mandatory Continuous Professional Development (MPCD) Committee, NIS, Oyo State Chapter, gave the advice at the MPCD’s programme held in Ibadan on Wednesday.

The two-day programme scheduled to end on March 23, has the theme: ‘‘Benefits of GNSS/CORS in Surveying Practice’’.

Iyiola said that the professional training was to acquaint members with the new methods and equipment to be employed by members in improving the practice of the profession.

‘‘Today, things are changing eve, likewise technology.

‘‘At the end of this workshop, we expect our members to come out of this programme with new skills,’’ he said.

He urged members to upgrade themselves to be relevant with current trends in the profession to enable them to improve on quality of their services.

Mr Bakare Adekunle, a surveyor and participant said that he had acquired new skills from the training.

Adekunle, who works at the Office of Surveyor-General in Oyo State, said that he had read about CORS but did not understand how it worked.

‘‘I am happy that this training has taught me more about CORS and how it works.

‘‘It has also taught me how to use GPS and data in surveying practice,’’ he said.

Mr Ola Shiyanbola, the Chairman, NIS, Oyo State chapter, said that the branch would not relent in keeping members abreast of new developments in the profession and in other areas of human endeavours.

He urged members to always attend and listen to educative programmes in surveying and other human endeavours, saying no knowledge was lost.

‘‘Survey practice is more than appending our signatures on plans.

‘‘Let us watch our activities on how we are practicing; some of us are daily damaging our image. We must put a stop to this,’’ he said.

Shiyanbola thanked members for their usual support for the state executive members and their programmes. (NAN)
