Minna, March 21, 2017( NAN) Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim the President, Muslims/Christian Inter Religious Peace Foundation, an NGO says ensuring the education of the girl child is critical to enthroning a better society.
Ibrahim said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Minna.
She said that the girl child was a home builder and the custodian of future generation.
“Our attitudes toward the girl child education must change for better, if we really want to turn our society around for better,’’ she said.
She stressed that the only way the society could be sanitised and become sophisticated was to educate the custodians of families from the beginning and prepare them for better future.
She said that young girls of today would eventually become wives and mothers that would be in charge of families hence the need to make them more enlightened and educated.
Ibrahim described family as a political unit in every society which played critical role in nation-building.
Ibrahim therefore implored government at all levels to initiate policies that would restore the glory and dignity of the girl-child and prepare her for a better future.
She added that the foundation was currently sponsoring 50 girls in various secondary schools in Niger State.
She said that the foundation would sponsor the girls up to university level as part of its commitment and contribution to promoting girl child education in the state.
“We selected the most brilliant students in rural areas and motivated them with basic education facilities to encourage parents to enrol their children in schools.’’
She, however, said that the foundation was partnering with Muslim and Christian clerics in the state to teach religious tolerance and child education.
According to her, this has helped a lot in mobilising parents to enroll their children in schools.
She advised governments at all levels to evolve education policies that would enhance qualitative education for the child through the provision of learning materials in public schools.
Ibrahim said that the foundation would continue to mobilise youths to shun all forms of violence to ensure peace, progress and political stability of the state and the country generally.
She said that the foundation on its part was doing everything possible to promote religious tolerance and understanding among youths and to end violence in the country. (NAN)
