Medical experts task Nigerians on good oral health

Keffi (Nasarawa State), March 21, 2017 (NAN) Medical experts have advised Nigerians to embrace oral hygiene to avoid contacting mouth diseases.

They gave the advice during this year’s World Oral Health Day celebration in Keffi on Tuesday.

The experts included the Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State, Dr Joshua Giyan.

Others were a Consultant on Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery, Dr Idehen Kelvin, and a Consultant Periodontist, Dr Adesakin Michael, from the same FMC Keffi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a “periodontist’’ is a specialist in the study and treatment of diseases and tissues of the tooth.

They all spoke on the theme of the celebration: “Live mouth smart: Be confident through life’’, which also featured free dental check-ups.

In his contribution, Giyan said that people should avoid taking tobacco and alcohol in excess.

He said that healthy living starts with clean mouth, hence the need to take good care of the mouth which does so many things in the body.

The medical director underscored the need to use the mass media to enlighten people on the need to adopt the habit of regular visit to dentists.

Kelvin also urged people to visit a dentist twice a year or every six months to maintain good oral hygiene.

He said people should adopt the habit of brushing their teeth twice daily after eating in the morning and before going to bed.

Kelvin said anybody observing these steps repeatedly and also paying visit to the dentist regularly is sure to have a good oral health.

He said there was need to imbibe habits that discourage oral disease, refines food products and ensure foods were cleaned before eating.

On his part, Michael, the Consultant Periodontist, enjoined patients to stop patronising quacks and traditional herbalists over oral medication and attend orthodox medical facilities. (NAN)
