Osogbo, March 15, 2017 (NAN)  To improve the quality of education in the country, government at all levels must invest in teachers’ education.

Alhaji Kolawole Fatai, the Permanent Secretary, Osun Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), said this in  an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Fatai said it was imperative for government to ensure that teachers were trained to become better qualified in their profession.

“There is urgent need for government to invest more in teachers’ education, because it is not possible to teach what you don’t know.

“Our teachers need to be exposed to training from time to time for them to meet  international standards,” he said.

The SUBEB boss also called on government to adequately motivate teachers, saying  lack of motivation would surely kill teachers’ morale.

“When the morale is dead, delivering the best teaching practice becomes a task,” he said.

Decrying the falling standard of education  in the country, he expressed regrets that many of the nation’s university graduates had been unable to secure jobs.

“It is a pity that many of our graduates nowadays are not employable.

“This really shows the decay in our education system and calls for urgent government attention.

” Government must strive to improve on the input going into the education system, especially when it comes to financing teachers’ education and infrastructural development,” he said.

He, however, commended  the Osun government for its  achievements  in the areas of infrastructural development and teachers’ welfare.

“These show the commitment of the state government  to  ensuring the delivery of quality and sound education,” he said. (NAN)
