Karu (Nasarawa State) March 15, 2017 (NAN) A member of the Nasarawa House of Assembly, Alhaji Hashimu Jibrin (APC,Karu/Gitata), has decried the indiscriminate dumping of waste along the Keffi-Abuja highway.

“Residents of Karu, Masaka, Mararaba and other settlements along the Keffi-Abuja road dump their refuse on the highway; this is bad and should be condemned by everyone,” he told the News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Karu.

He called for an to the trend in view of its health implications.

Jibrin said that the trend was particularly worrisome because the state government had adopted measures to ensure a clean environment to forestall any epidemic.

He wondered why residents should dump their refuse along the road, pointing out that such actions were unhygienic and would never be condoned.

“Government is doing its best to maintain a clean environment. We expect everyone to complement such efforts by keeping his or her environment clean.

“When refused is dumped on the highway, the stench affects everyone. There are designated places for dumping refuse which should be used,” he said.

Jibrin also advised the residents to stop throwing refuse into gutters and markets, saying that the heaps could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the causative agents of malaria.

“The heaps of dirt could also lead to many other communicable diseases,” he said. (NAN)
