Boreholes
By Chukwuemeka Opara
Abakaliki, March 15, 2017 (NAN) The Ebonyi Commissioner for Water Resources, Mrs Euphemia Nwali, says the government has constructed boreholes in 13 general hospitals across the state to boost healthcare delivery.
Nwali disclosed this on Wednesday in Abakaliki in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She said that the projects cost millions of naira and were awaiting inauguration by Gov. David Umahi.
According to her, the government also constructed boreholes at the state House of Assembly complex among other areas.
“The boreholes are well-treated, used to reticulate water in the complexes and surrounding areas while overhead tanks were also constructed for them.
“The ministry is currently reticulating water to all parts of Abakaliki while other parts of the state would also benefit in due course.”
The commissioner urged people residing in areas where water had been reticulated, to register with the ministry for water to be connected in their households.
“Most people do not know that there is water available for them to access.
“We can only assist them in connecting water and our officials are executing the reticulation process at a fast rate which is highly commendable.”
She urged residents in areas where water has not been reticulated to exercise patience as the government was battling with challenges such as breakage of underneath water pipes.
“The contractors handling the massive road and street light projects in the town damage the pipes and this affects the free flow of water to all ends and subsequently results in breakages.
“We are, however, carrying out repairs on these pipes on a daily basis and we can confidently declare the successful provision of water to most parts of the town,” she said.
She noted that the government had successfully rehabilitated the Old Abakaliki, Ezillo and Uburu Water Schemes to complement the newly constructed Oferekpe Water Scheme.
“The construction of the Ivo Water Scheme is progressing rapidly as the rehabilitated schemes supply constant water to surrounding areas such as Ohaukwu, Ezillo, Agba, among others.
“We are also generating huge sums of money to the state government through our services and are poised to improve upon our current performance,” she said. (NAN)
