Lagos, March 14, 2017 (NAN) Prof. Uno Uno, the Head of Projects and Examinations, National Junior Engineers Technicians Scientists (JETS), on Tuesday scored high the innovations by young engineers at the ongoing national JETS competition in Lagos, describing them as internationally acceptable.“The innovations by the young engineers are of international standards.
“I can attest to the fact that the various projects by the students are in line with internationally approved standards; the only thing left is the commercial production of the inventions and some finishing touches,” he said.
“From what we can see here, the ideas and innovations are wonderful and it gives us a hope of a better technological advanced country in the future. All the projects are well articulated.”
The 20th edition of the competition got underway on Tuesday at one of the oldest schools in Lagos — CMS Grammar School, Bariga, where students from across the country displayed rare talents.
This year’s edition recorded a huge success as students developed inventions that can stand the test of time.
All the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had stands to display the ingenuity of the junior engineers.
Two students from Lagos State produced a project titled:“Fire Intrusion Detection System using GSM-based Micro Controller.”
NAN also reports that the project is about using an automated device in controlling fire and also an alert system in case of burglary.
The device is expected to make an automatic call to the owner and other relevant agencies in case of fire outbreak or burglary. It can also control the situation before any intervention.
The initiators of the project — Adesina David and Adewumi Adebowale — from Government Technical College, Agindingbi, Lagos, said the project was designed to stem the rising fire incidents and crimes in the country.
“We conceived of this project upon noticing the high rate of fire outbreaks, so we said to ourselves with the knowledge at our disposal what can we bring out; so we come out with this.”
For Eze Nnamdi and Mathew Ayanleke from Ijaiye Ojokoro Senior High School, Lagos, theirs is to find a solution to the frequent clashes between the herdsmen and the farmers through the use of technology.
The duo designed a machine called Automated Pest Control System (APSCS). This machines comes with an infrared lighting and an alarm switch that blares in case of pest intrusion on farmlands.
Speaking on the invention, they expressed the hope that it could end the frosty relationships between farmers and herdsmen.
“It can help reduce the clashes between the herdsmen and the farmers because if there is a case of intrusion on a farmland the sensor will trigger an alarm that may cause a disturbance to the cows.
“Cows don’t like noises so they tends to run helter-skelter on hearing loud noises and it also makes it difficult for the herdsmen to control them,” the students said.
Other innovations includes a home-made Bio-Gas system tagged “Bio-degradable Waste-to-Wealth” by the duo of Terence Udoma and Enobong Etukudo from Pegasus Schools, Eket in Akwa-Ibom.
It is a simple process of production of bio-gas for domestic use from cow faeces through simple and almost effortless process.
Others are Waste Water Management Using Moringa Seeds by Esther Namesi and Anyaoha Adaeze from Government Girls Secondary School, Abuja.
The innovation is purification of sewage and waste waters through Moringa seeds. It saves the use of chemicals such as chlorine and fluorine which has side effects on humans.
The students — Oladele Ololade from Akilo Primary School and Haka Kava from Keke Primary schools — also from Lagos, were also guided on how to have a soiless planting called “Hydroponic Farming”.
From Ogun State a project titled “Automated Operative Alternative Power Source from Nature” was presented. It is aimed at generating power through farm produce such as lime, potatoes and the rest.
Osun State presented a Cassava Grinding Machine, while Kogi presented an easily controlled electric cooker, while Edo students came up with Operational Optical Meter that can measure the distance between objects using convent lenses.
Edo Star produced “Fertlised Egg Incubator and GSM Controlled Load System. Imo had at their stand Udoma Mesons and Chidiebere Osinanchi, who jointly produced Tomato Preservation through Steeming.
Kaduna State produced a vegetable solar dryer, while Ondo State made end products of Cocoa. (NAN)
