Kano, March 9, 2017 (NAN) A Kano-based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Women in Leadership, has described the gender disparity as a major impediment to women participation in politics and governance.

The Vice Chairperson of the organisation, Hajiya Aishatu Maijama’a, made the remark at a workshop in Kano on Thursday.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was organised by Disputes Resolution and Development Initiative (DAG), as part of activities to commemorate the International Women’s Day.

Maijama’a said that women were determined more than ever before to break the jinx of gross marginalisation in leadership, adding that from the awareness they were creating, they have made considerable headway.

She said the formation of the Women in leadership Initiative, was meant to bridge the gap that had made women to play a second fiddle in politics and governance.

“Such a laudable objective can only be realised with the NGO taking the bull by the horns,” Maijama’a said.

According to her, gender disparity is an anathema to democracy considering the fact that in the present democratic dispensation women had been pushed to the back seat of despair and hopelessness.

“The political landscape is supposed to provide a level playing field to all Nigerians men and women devoid of gender bias.

On the forthcoming Local Government Councils polls in Kano, she maintained that nothing would stop women from participating actively in the exercise.

In his remarks, the Executive Director, Disputes Resolutions and Development Initiative (DAG), Alhaji Mustapha Muhammad, said DAG was committed to supporting women struggle for active participation in politics and governance.

He said the International Women’s Day, which was celebrated worldwide, had given women the opportunity to play their role and occupy the rightful place in the scheme of things.

He commended the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II for supporting the clamour for women emancipation. (NAN)
