Motorcyclist

Lagos, March 9, 2017 (NAN) A 39-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Olamilekan Alowole, who allegedly obtained N450, 000 from a woman on the pretext of assisting her to purchase a motorcycle, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court charged with fraud.
Alowole, who lives in Ayetoro, Sango-Ota area of Ogun, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of stealing and fraud.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in 2015 at Araromi Street, Ayobo, a suburb of Lagos.
Samuel said the complainant, Janet Akinde, gave N450, 000 to the accused to purchase a motorcycle for her, but he converted the money to personal use.
“The accused fraudulently collected the money but failed to purchase the motorcycle on behalf of the complainant as agreed.
“The complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was immediately apprehended,” he said.
The offence contravened Section of the 285 and 312 Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 285 stipulates three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 312 provides fifteen years imprisonment for fraud.
The Magistrate, E.O. Ogunkanmi, granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
“The sureties must be gainfully employed and also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.”
The court adjourned the case to Feb. 28 for mention. (NAN)
