Abuja, March 8, 2017 (NAN) The Registrar, Surveyor Council of Nigeria (SUCON), Mr Sulaiman Hassan, has called on building planning authority to enforce strict compliance to building plan approvals for easy mapping and house numbering in towns.

Hassan told the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday that non-compliance to approved building plan contributes to poor structuring of houses.

He said that the planning authority does the planning and design of a building, while the surveyors implement the designs, but compliance by beneficiaries was low.

He explained that poor building structures which also lead to poor mapping and house numbering arises as a result of many plot owners not complying with the original approval given to them.

“The urban planner can do a very good design of a neighbourhood, the surveyor can do a very good layout of a neighbourhood, but the compliance by the beneficiaries of the plot is usually the problem.

“Many plot owners do not abide by the rules and regulations given by the planning authority, which makes some areas so difficult to access when it comes to proper mapping and numbering of the areas.

“It is a collective thing for the inhabitant of a place to key and transform those plans into a real life situation,” he said.

The registrar said that the greed of some Nigerians was also contributing to poor structuring, adding that pegs put by surveyors are not strictly adhered to.

“Our greed is another aspect, once one person steps one centimetre outside his approved plan, others follow suit and the plan is being abused.”

He said that the urban and regional planning authority should put strict measures in place to ensure that building plans are properly adhered to.

Hassan also called on the relevant authorities to penalise offenders to serve as a deterrent to others. (NAN)
