Mayhem
By Deborah Akpede
Lagos, March 7, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday fixed March 8 for its judgment on a case involving two unemployed men who caused mayhem by vandalising a commercial bus in Oshodi area of Lagos State.
The magistrate, Mr A. A. Adesanya, fixed the date after the duo had pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of a breach of the peace, conspiracy and damage.
He ordered that the accused should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, and adjourned the case for facts and sentencing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, had told the court that the accused with some others still at large committed the offences on March 4 in Oshodi, Lagos.
Nwosu said that the accused conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by destroying a commercial Tata bus with Registration No. AKD 616XA.
“The accused willfully damaged the front and rear wind screens and all the window glasses of the bus,” he said.
Nwosu said the driver of the bus, who accidently hit somebody, abandoned it and ran away when he saw some `area boys’ running toward him.
“The vehicle hit one miscreant, popularly called `area boy’ at Oshodi `Under Bridge’ and some of the hoodlums there decided to damage the vehicle with stones, sticks, iron rods and other weapons.
“When the police team got to the scene, some of the accused persons were arrested, while the others escaped,” he said.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 166, 348 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 348 provides a to two-year jail term for offenders. (NAN)
