Waste
By Aminu Ahmed Garko
Suleja (Niger), March 7, 2017 (NAN) The Niger Government is to introduce waste collection fees for all residents so as to ensure proper collection and disposal of waste in the state.
Dr Aliyu Tangwagi, the Commissioner for Environment, made this known in Suleja, while speaking at the secretariat of Suleja Local Government Council on Tuesday.
He said that the ministry would use tricycles to collect and transport refuse from certain spots in Suleja, Minna, Kontagora and Bida Local Government Areas, where heavy-duty vehicles could not gain access to.
He said that the heavy-duty vehicles of the ministry often encountered access problems in major township roads across Suleja, Minna, Kontagora and Bida Local Government Areas due to the poor condition of the roads.
“ The roads are very narrow; hence the need for the ministry to introduce designated areas for residents to dump their waste for proper collection.
“We will soon introduce waste collection fees for the residents to enable us to discharge our responsibilities effectively,’’ he said.
The commissioner, however, said that the state government would engage the services of a consultant to handle the collection of the waste collection fees from the residents.
He solicited the support of chairmen of local government councils and traditional rulers in efforts to sensitise the people to the need to desist from dumping refuse in waterways in order to prevent flooding. (NAN)
