Lapai, (Niger) March 3, 2017 (NAN) Dr Samuel Ibrahim, a lecturer in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has called on the Federal Government to put in place stringent measures to check the activities of loggers to save economic trees.

Ibrahim, senior lecturer in the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, made the call on Friday in Lapai in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He spoke on the sidelines of activity to mark 2017 World Wild Life Day.

NAN reports that the theme of the 2017 World Wild Life Day celebration is: “Listen to the young voices.”

Ibrahim observed that large numbers of economic trees were being cut down daily through the illegal activities of loggers.

“These activities are causing deforestation and may climax to desertification if not checked.

“The economic trees being lost included shear butter, mango, guava, moringa, cashew, orange and almond tree amongst others.

“If preserved, these trees will boost the economy of the people and protect their houses from hurricane” Ibrahim said.

The lecturer pointed out that as a result of wild fire caused by human activities such as urbanization and illegal felling of trees; forests are being depleted of trees.

“Desertification is almost encroaching into our green areas; it can be checked if people replace lost trees by planting trees to reclaim the lumbered trees,’’ he said.
