Stop felling trees, Ekiti Govt. warns residents

Ado-Ekiti, March 3, 2017 (NAN) The Ekiti State Government has warned residents against felling of trees, blockage of drainages and culverts.

The Commissioner for Environment, Chief Bisi Kolawole, gave the warning on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti.

He said that warning became imperative because such habits could lead to disasters, including windstorm, erosion and flooding.

Kolawole said that the preservation of the state’s natural resources, especially forestry and the general environment was a collective responsibility.

He further said aside from boosting the agro-economy of the state, preserving trees, especially those planted in residential areas served as wind breakers in times of storm.

Kolawole also called on the people to shun throwing or dumping of refuse into gutters and water channels to guard against flooding and erosion.

The commissioner disclosed that mass clearing of culverts and gutters across the state to allow easy flow of water during rainy season.(NAN)
