25 teams to participate in Gov. Samuel Ortom Handball Championships

Abuja, March 2, 2017 (NAN) No fewer than 25 teams from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT are expected to participate in the maiden edition of Samuel Ortom National Handball Open Championships.

Benjamin Peblow, a member of the championships’ organising committee, told newsmen on Thursday in Abuja that the championships would help to resuscitate the game in the state and Nigeria at large.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championships is slated to hold in Makurdi, Benue from March 19 to March 29.

“We appreciate our governor, Samuel Ortom, for giving us the right to host the championships and for taking a bold step to resuscitate the game.

“Handball is dying in Benue, but with this competition, we hope it will come back to life.

“We are expecting no less than 25 teams from across the 36 states of the federation.

“We are also expecting teams from the paramilitary, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Civil Defence, the Nigerian Army and the Police,’’ Peblow, who is also Chairman of Benue Handball Reunion, said.

He added that the event was also unique in view of its status as a national championships, with the winners representing Nigeria on the continent.(NAN)
