Sitting

Yola, March 2, 2017 (NAN) Yola North Metropolitan legislative chamber closed indefinitely one month ago has been reopened for legislative activities following a court order and a directive to that effect by Adamawa House of Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that moves by seven out of the 11 councillors to impeach the Speaker, Mallam Buhari Yahuza, had led to fracas in the chamber, resulting in it’s subsequent closure for weeks.

A Yola High Court had ordered the reopening of the chambers, just as the State House of Assembly, in a sitting on Monday after receiving report on the crisis from its Committee on Public Petitions, passed a resolution directing the opening of the chamber for the councillors to resume normal legislative activities.

Our correspondent who visited the council on Thursday reports that the chamber was opened with the clerk and other legislative staff but no Councillor showed up for the usual sitting.

Commenting, Clerk of the council, Mrs Rahab Pnadulini, said she had complied with the Court and House directives, by opening the chamber.

“The chamber is open and we are waiting for the Councillors to resume sitting,” Pnadulini said.

Efforts to get the embattled Speaker of the Council to comment proved abortive as he was not at home and did not pick calls.

However, one of the Councillors who spoke to NAN, Mallam Mustafa Garba of Gwadabawa Ward, said that they were unable to sit due to absence of some of their members that went to Gombe office of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

“We could not sit today as five of our members that have case with EFCC had gone to the commission’s office in Gombe,” Garba said. (NAN)
