Heritage

Lagos, Feb. 27, 2017 (NAN) Dr Ferdinand Anikwe, the Director-General, Center for Black Arts and Africa Culture (CBAAC), has called on National Assembly to enact laws that will salvage the Nigerian cultural heritage.
Anikwe, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos, added that this became imperative as the Nigerian cultural heritage was gradually fading.
“The National Assembly should create time to get into language development and functionality as well as cultural programmes.
“They should pick a day to wear their native attires and deliberations for that day should be done in an indigenous language.
“This is a way of making Nigerians realise the importance of promoting the nation’s cultural heritage,’’ he said.
Anikwe said that Britain had used its language to talk about civilisation and development; through this it had been able to dominate, exterminate and minimise the use of other languages.
“These people started somewhere and have been able to achieve a lot; we can start now because we can’t fold our hands and watch our precious culture die,’’ he said.
The D-G therefore encouraged the elites, parents and teachers to begin to teach their children and wards in their local dialects. (NAN)
