Civil servant, 34, charged with child defilement, gets N500, 000 bail

Lagos, Feb. 23, 2017(NAN) A 34-year-old man, Adetomiwa Ogunwa, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, a civil servant, who resides at Millennium Estate, Oko-Oba, asuburb of Lagos, is being tried for child defilement.

The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu told the court that the offence was committed sometime in January at the accused’s apartment.

“The girl had just returned from the school and was lying on the couch in her father’s living room when the accused came in.

“The accused knew that the girl was the only person at home and he shut the door and defiled her,” he said.

Ogu said following the defilement, the girl’s mood changed and she finally opened up to her elder sister.

The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence carries life imprisonment.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, in her ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to March 15 for mention. (NAN)
