Lagos, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) The Lagos State Tennis Association (LSTA) on Wednesday assured Lagosians of the association’s determination to revive the “Eko U-15 Tennis Championships’’.
A former 2nd Vice-Chairman of the association, Kehinde Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the competition was among other competitions earmarked for the 2017 calendar.
He said that the body would also introduce monthly tennis competitions.
“We are starting our programmes for the year with a competition for youths aged 10 to 15.
“The competition is targeted at discovering and grooming new talents.
“It is an avenue where the best of young players will be made to develop their skills while playing competitive tennis.
“The high point of this year’s event will be in the female category which we missed in the 2016 calendar.
“It will be re-branded to meet international standard which will provide the platform for young players looking forward to play professional tennis within or outside the country,’’ Ajayi said.
He said that the competitions were designed to keep the players and the technical officials abreast with modern techniques of the game.
“One of the main aims of the competition is to keep players, referees, officials and coaches up-to-date with the modern techniques of the tennis.
“We understand the nature of tennis where rules can change at any given time, so we are trying to keep our players, coaches and technical officials knowledgeable on the developments in the game.
“LSTA leads other states in organising competitions and clinics; we are aware other states are looking up to us, so we just have to maintain the standard,’’ Ajayi said. (NAN)
