Court orders remand of carpenter over alleged cell phone theft

Lagos, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of a carpenter, Raji Samuel, in kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a cell phone, valued at N10, 000.

The Magistrate, M.O. Osinbajo, ordered the remand as the defendant admitted committing the offence and adjourned the case till Feb. 28 for sentencing.

The accused, 22, resident of No. 45, Lerato Avenue, Ijaiye Ojokoro, a Lagos suburb with others still at large is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the accused committed the offences at 12.15 a.m. on Jan. 30 at Ajala Bus Stop, Ijaiye Ojokoro, Lagos.

He alleged that the carpenter conspired with others who are still at large to steal.

Egunjobi said that the accused with his gang robbed the complainant, one Auwal Adamu, of his possession.

He said that the complainant was robbed while returning from work.

“The accused and his cohorts collected the complainant mobile phone.

“They were about ripping him of his money when they saw a police patrol vehicle coming towards them.

“ The accused was apprehended by the police, while others fled,’’ the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to two-year imprisonment if convicted. (NAN)
