Lagos, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday fixed Feb. 28 for sentencing of a female teacher, Olabode Omolara, charged with fraud and stealing.
The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Osinbajo, fixed the date after Omolara, 36, who resides at Folorunsho Street, Ayobo, Ipaja in Lagos, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge.
Osinbajo ordered the accused to be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, and adjourned for facts and sentencing.
The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 carries a penalty of three years jail term, while Section 312 prescribes 15 years imprisonment.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the accused committed the offences between December 2016 and January 2017 at different times, at Bada Bus Stop, Ayobo, Ipaja.
Egunjobi said the accused unlawfully and fraudulently obtained personal effects and money totalling N262,000, property of Mr Sodiq Abiodun, the complainant.
“The accused is a family friend and church member to the complainant.
“Under the pretext of securing a loan from Wema Bank, through her brother, and to invest in a business at Forte-oil company, the accused collected the complainant’s international passport.
“She also obtained the sum of N262,000 and driver’s licence from Abiodun and absconded.
“All efforts made by the complainant to recover his money and other items were unsuccessful as the accused’s mobile phone was switched off,’’ he said.
Egunjobi said the complainant reported the matter to the police and it was discovered that Omolara had converted the money to her own use. (NAN)
