NHRC tasks governments on protection of citizens as world marks social justice day

Abuja, Feb. 17, 2017 (NAN) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on governments at all levels and other stakeholders to support the creation of an
enabling environment for the promotion and protection of human rights.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the commission, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, who made the call on the eve of the 2017 International Day for Social Justice, said this was core to the attainment of social justice in any society.

In a statement signed by Fatima Mohammed, the Chief Press Officer of the commission, Ovrawah said that Nigeria could not afford to neglect social justice in her quest for social development and advancement of human rights.

The acting executive secretary noted that it was pertinent for governments at all levels to continue to support policies and programmes aimed at addressing the plight of the unemployed and victims of administrative injustice.

She said programmes to help Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), victims of insurgency and physically challenged persons were also needed.

She noted the need to encourage and sustain the Federal Government’s intervention in the area of Social Security Protection.

According to her, this can impact positively on the social condition of the less privileged in the society.

She enjoined Nigerians to see the celebration of the day of social justice as a wake-up call to being responsible citizens in supporting government policies aimed at promoting citizen’s the security and welfare.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Day of Social Justice  is celebrated on Feb. 20 to raise awareness on the need to prioritise the protection of vulnerable groups in the society particularly persons with disabilities.(NAN)
