Lagos, Feb. 17, 2017 (NAN) A 30-year-old fashion designer, Oluwatosin Eke, on Friday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve her five-year-old marriage, citing abandonment by her husband.
Oluwatosin, an indigene of Ekiti and mother of two, resides at No. 63, Dopemu Road, Papa-Ashafa, Agege, Lagos.
“My husband is irresponsible and he does not care or cater for me and the children.
“We have been squatting with family members since we got married as he refused to get us an accommodation, ” she told the court.
The petitioner claimed that for the past five years, they were living with the respondent’s (the husband) elder brother until recently when he refused to accommodate them.
“My husband refused to get an accommodation for me and the children and asked us to go and put up with my elder sister.
“I made efforts to secure an accommodation on my own but he refused to pay, saying he could not afford it.’’
Oluwatosin described her husband as irresponsible and that he did not bother about their welfare.
She added:“He abandoned us and has not been responsible for me and the children’s upkeep.”
The petitioner alleged that her husband beat her to a pulp the day he came to check her and the children in the apartment she rented with her money.
She pleaded with the court to separate them as she was no longer interested in the union.
“I am no longer interested in the union; the love I have for him has faded.
“I also want my husband to stop threatening me and to take up the responsibility of the children’s education and upkeep.”
The respondent, Jude, 34, from Anambra, denied the allegations levelled against him by the wife.
Jude, a casual worker with an event planning company, said he begged his wife to squat with her elder sister pending when he would be financially buoyant to get an accommodation.
“My wife refused and told me to rent a flat. I told her I could not afford it and that we should get a room instead.
“Considering the type of job I am doing, I told her that I could not rent a flat, but she refused and got the accommodation herself.’’
The husband claimed to have gone to check his wife and the children in their new abode, but was driven away by her.
The court’s President, Mr Philip Williams, admonished the respondent (the husband) for maltreating her and failure to care for his family.
He adjourned the case to March 23 for judgment. (NAN)
