Tillerson to face first test as Chief U.S. diplomat at G20 meeting

Bonn (Germany), Feb. 16, 2017 (dpa/NAN) New U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson makes his debut on the world stage on Thursday by leading the Trump Administration’s delegation at a meeting of the G20 foreign ministers in Bonn.

Hosted by German Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, another newcomer, to the role the G20 meeting in Bonn’s former national parliament building has a long list of subjects on its agenda.

The slew of issues facing foreign ministers when they arrive in Bonn is likely to range from Russia, Syria and North Korea.

Others are from the Middle East, Mexico, Iran, eastern Ukraine, through to climate change and terrorism, notably the extremist Islamic State.

The two-day G20 meeting might also serve as a platform for the first face-to-face contact between the Trump White House and Moscow.

Tillerson is scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Bonn.

The G20 meeting is one of three top-level meetings in Europe this week where the Trump Administration is likely to be called upon to clarify its current world view.

In addition to this week’s NATO defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is expected to set out the White House’s new approach to security issues.

This would also be discussed at the annual security conference in Munich starting on Friday.(dpa/NAN)
